Hilma (Linde) Marie Griswold, age 94, of St. Croix Falls, Wisc. died March 11, 2013 at Fairview Lakes Hospital in Wyoming, MN of natural causes.

She was born November 6, 1918 to Dr. Herman Linde MD and Hilma Mae Linde in Cyrus, MN. Her mother died five days after Hilma was born in the flu epidemic and a five-year-old brother, Norman, died shortly thereafter. Her father remarried in three years to Inga Hippie and Hilma was blessed with two brothers from this union. The Lindes were a musical family and she had an excellent piano background and with her father’s musical friends they formed ensembles who would come over to the house and play. She also belonged to Campfire Girls. She was an alto in a girls’ quartet and sang in a group with her father.

Hilma worked at her dad’s drugstore and graduated from Cyrus High in 1936. She also worked as a maid as a student. Attending McPhail School of Music and The Mpls. School of Music she met Russ, her husband to-be. She earned a degree in voice in 1941 and got a job at Mound MN Public Schools, then Detroit Lakes and then she moved back to Minneapolis and married Russell Griswold June 10, 194, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cyrus MN. Russ was on a three day pass out of Ft. Snelling. After the war ended Hilma raised the family while Russ taught school in Minneapolis and South Dakota for about five years. In Brainerd, MN in 1952 Hilma returned to teaching with her youngest now 3 years-old. She taught in Pillager Public Schools for two years. After she had another baby Hilma turned to teach voice in a private arts studio from 1955 to 1960. She helped many youth prepare for competitions and auditions.

Whether teaching or not she was always around the Brainerd area playing or singing at weddings, funerals and special events, and was organist at First Lutheran Church also. In 1960 they moved to Wisconsin and Hilma taught second grade music for 24 years at St. Croix Falls until 1978. There were many operettas and she was involved with the Alpine Chorus. After retiring, Hilma substitute taught and traveled. From 1990 until Easter Sunday 2009 she played organ at United Methodist in St. Croix Falls. There were a grand total of 70 years’ musical service for her faith, with involvement in Center City and Lindstrom MN churches and North Heights Lutheran in Roseville, MN.

She is preceded in death by mother Hilma, brother Norman, father Herman, and stepmother Inga Linde, and sisters-in-law Marcella Linde and Janice Linde. She is survived by: sons Lynn (Rene) Griswold, Dean (Diane) Griswold, Byron Grsiwold; three grand daughters and two great grandsons; two brothers Erling Linde and Llewellyn Linde, many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral service was March 15 at United Methodist Church, St. Croix Falls, Wisc, with rev. Michael Weaver officiating. Pallbearers were Larry Bill, Mark Bill, David Linde, Eric Linde, Justin Witte and James Young. Interment at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements were by Grandstrand Funeral Home, Lindstrom, MN.
