Major Shorkley served in the 51st Penna. Volunteer Infantry from 11 Nov 1861 until 27 Jul 1865. He was seriously wounded in the left arm at Antietam. While convalescing, he was assigned to command the short-lived paroled p.o.w. camp in Westtown, West Chester, PA. He returned to his regiment when the camp was shut down in Sept. 1863.
The fingers of his right hand were carried away by a shot during the infamous Crater battle in Petersburg in 1864. At the end of his Civil War service, he joined the regular Army and served until 1883.
