Donald, a member of the Paiute Indian tribe, enlisted in the Army on 20 March 1943 and volunteered for parachutist duty.

He was assigned to the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment and participated in the jump into Normandy, France on D-Day, 6 June 1944.

He was one of many who unfortunately landed in the flooded plains of the Merderet or Douve Rivers and drowned due to being weighed down by equipment.

Although his death occurred on 6 June, his body was not recovered until 10 June and that became the date of official date of record for his death.

His military awards include the Purple Heart and the Combat Infantryman Badge (CIB), both awarded posthumously.
