Attended Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio in 1857.
Enlisted in the Civil War as a Private with Company F, 5th Ohio Calvary Regiment from 1861-4.
Relocated to Duluth, St. Louis County, Minnesota in 1865 and married Mary L. Ryder where he was a potato farmer and teacher. Moved to Emmons County, North Dakota in 1882 where he served as the first Justice of the Peace and later as postmaster.
Married December 28, 1865, to Mary L. Ryder, had one daughter, Mattie, in 1867 and one son, Edward (Eddy) in 1870.
