BENJAMIN D. KNUTSON

FARMER IS KILLED IN CRASH, BOY FATALLY HURT
GIBSON MAN AUTO VICTIM AT BOLT, WIS.
Ben Knudson(sic), 72, Killed When Car Driven By Milwaukee Man Goes Into Ditch
Going off the road a mile south of Bolt, Kewaunee county, right at the
Manitowoc county line, an automobile owned and driven by Walter Kunkel,
22, Milwaukee and with four other passengers rolled over twice Sunday
afternoon and resulted in the death of Benjamin Knudson, 72, a town of
Gibson farmer.
Kunkel is Held.
Kunkel is being held by the sheriff of Kewaunee county, pending the outcome
of the coroner's jury hearing, which is being held this afternoon at Bolt,
the scene of the crash. According to reports of the accident, Kunkel swerved
over to the left side of the road when his wheels caught in the loose gravel
and he lost control of the machine. The car rolled over in the ditch and
Knudson, who suffered a fractured skull and broken neck, died almost instantly.
He was sitting in the back seat of the machine. Kunkel was badly bruised and
had a broken hand and severe scalp wounds. Peter Viehweg, 40, of Milwaukee,
a companion of the driver of the car and his four year old son were not badly
hurt. The fifth occupant of the car, Arthur Reimers, a brother in law of
Knudson, suffered a dislocated shoulder.
Boy Thrown Clear.
The Milwaukee parties had come up from Milwaukee on Saturday to visit over
the weekend with the Knudsons in the town of Gibson. Reports of the accident
state that the four year old son of Viehweg was thrown clear of the car when
it tipped over and landed in the field some distance from the scene of the
wreck but was unhurt. When the Kunkel car stopped, it rested with the wheels
up in the air. Passing motorists came to the assistance of the party of four
penned in the machine and assisted them out of the machine. Knudson was dead
but Kunkel and Reimers were rushed to the Kewaunee hospital. The coroner and
district attorney at Kewaunee decided that an inquest would be held at Bolt
this afternoon. Knudson is a prominent well to do farmer in the town of Gibson,
Manitowoc county. He is survived by a wife and one daughter, Mabel. Funeral
arrangements have not been made as yet.
