World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Oakley Buckinghamshire, England, he served as a Sergeant Major in the 2/4th Battalion, Oxford-Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, British Army. In actions at the village of Fayet, near St. Quentin, France, April 28, 1917, Sergeant Major Brooks while taking part in a raid on the enemy's trenches, saw that the front wave was checked by an enemy machine-gun. On his own initiative, he rushed forward, capturing the gun, killing one of the gunners with his revolver and bayoneting another. As the remaining gun crew ran off, he turned the machine-gun on to the retreating enemy which added to the success of the operations. For most prestigious award for gallantry, he was promoted Warrant Officer and awarded the Victoria Cross on July 2, 1917. After the war, he worked on the production line for Morris Motors at their Cowley plant in Oxford, England, where he lived until his death at age 61.
