Presidential Cabinet Secretary, United States Diplomat. He served as the 57th United States Secretary of the Treasury during the administrations of Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson (1961 to 1965). His father was a wealthy business executive with a Wall Street investment firm, Clarence was educated at Harvard University, prior to serving with the New York Stock Exchange. After working with his father's company for a period, he served with the United States Navy during World War II and saw action in the Pacific Theater. Following his return home, he was named chairman of his father's firm and with allegiance to the Republican Party, he supported Dwight D. Eisenhower's presidential bid. After Eisenhower was elected president, he appointed Dillon to serve as ambassador to France and in 1959, he was named Under Secretary of State for Economic Affairs. While serving as Secretary of the Treasury, he led the United States delegation to the first annual conference of the Alliance for Progress in Mexico City in 1962. He stressed the importance of reducing taxes in order to create economic growth. Dillon played a key roll in persuading the steel industry to decrease a price hike. After leaving Washington, he returned to activities as a private investment banker.
