Virgil attended Davis School through the 8th grade, and then Indianola schools, graduating in 1939. He took adult education classes from the Lincoln Institute of Business in refrigeration, metalluogy, water and chemical treatment and others. For years he took Eagle Scouts on canoeing trips to Canada. Virgil also enjoyed photography. He worked for AE Dairy through 1964,where he met Lila Elaine Huss.
He married Lila on June 20, 1960. After working for AE, Virgil worked for Cherry-Burrell Corporation, where he traveled and serviced dairy equipment nationwide. He then worked for the State of Iowa as consulting engineer for all institutions from 1974-1975. They enjoyed remodeling homes and worked in real estate in Arkansas for many years.
Virgil's interests included photography, Civil War history, carpentry, painting, paperhanging and electrical and plumbing work. He has a First Class Engineer's license since 1946 and was a member and director of the National Association of Power Engineers. Virgil and Lila's daughters are Marta and Dee Dee.
