Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He attended Wabash College at Crawfordsville, Indiana and his occupation was as a merchant prior to the war. In June 1861, he was mustered into the 10th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment as Captain of Company K. With the 10th, he fought in the battle at Rich Mountain, West Virginia and on August 19, 1861, he was commissioned a Lieutenant Colonel of the 25th Indiana Infantry. The 25th first served in the Missouri interior and in February 1862 became part of General Ulysses S. Grant's operations in Kentucky. He led the 25th at the battle at Fort Donelson and engaged in the battle at Shiloh, Tennessee in April 1862. He with the 25th participated in the siege of Corinth, Mississippi, was active with scouting and chasing guerrillas in Tennessee and Mississippi in the winter of 1862 to 1863. The 25th guarded railroads through the balance of 1863, they were on provost duty in Memphis, Tennessee and in early 1864 they scouted for enemy activity in Tennessee and Mississippi. In April 1864, he resigned his commission and reentered the service in January 1865, as Colonel of the 3rd U.S. Veteran Volunteer Infantry, a unit that served in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and at Camp Butler in Springfield, Illinois. On March 13, 1865, he was brevetted Brigadier General of U.S. Volunteers for his wartime experiences.
