He was born Feb. 21, 1915, in Morgantown, a son of the late Jacob Sherman and Frankie M. Loar Cale.

He graduated from Masontown High School and attended West Virginia University. He enlisted in the Navy in 1936 as an Apprentice Seaman and advanced through the ranks, retiring after 22 years as a Lieutenant Commander. He served two years in China during the Chinese/Japanese war and was there at the time the Japanese sank the United States riverboat the USS Panay on the Yangtze River. He was assigned to a ship at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked on Dec. 7, 1941. The ship was ordered at once to Australia, where it operated with the Australian Navy in the South Pacific. It was finally sunk during an enemy air attack in January 1943 near Guadalcanal. During his career, he served as commanding officer of four different ships.

After retiring from the Navy in 1958, he was with the Tidewater Council Boy Scouts of America in Norfolk, Va., where he served as District Scout Executive for Princess Anne County and Virginia Beach. In 1960, he returned home to Morgantown and was associated with the West Virginia University Physical Plant administration for 15 years.

He was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church and served as Lector for several years. He was one of the first Eucharistic Ministers for the church and served as such for several years. He also served one term as president of the St. Francis High School PTA. He was a lifetime member of the Morgantown Art Association and served one term as president of that organization.
