World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in East London, England, he served as a Sergeant in the 16th Battalion, Prince Consort's Own Rifle Brigade, British Army. On September 20, 1917, during the Battle of Passchendaele Ypres, Belgium, Sergeant Burman's company was held up by a machine gun at point-blank range. Going forward on his own, he killed the enemy gunner and carried the gun to the company's objective. Later about 40 of the enemy were enfilading their position on the right. Sergeant Burman with two others ran out got behind them, killing six and capturing two German officers and 29 men. For most prestigious gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross on November 26, 1917. He died at age 77 in Cromer Norfolk, England.
