World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Graig, Pontypridd, Wales, he served as a Sergeant in the 1st Battalion, Welsh Guards, British Army. On July 31, 1917, at the Yser Canal, during the third Battle of Ypres, Belgium, Sergeant Bye saw that the leading attack waves were being held up by two enemy blockhouses. He rushed the first one, put the German garrison out of action, then rejoined his company and went forward to the second objective. Later he volunteered to take charge of a detail to clear up a line of blockhouses which had been passed. He accomplished this by taking a number of prisoners, then advanced to the third objective and during this action he was accounted for taking over 70 enemy prisoners. For leadership and most prestigest gallantry, he was invested with Victoria Cross by King George V on September 27, 1917. After the war he worked at the Firbeck and Welbeck Collieries in the Nottingham and also became a temporary police constable at Mansfield, Notts and also served in World War II. He died at age 72 in Nottingham, England.
