GEORGE GILBERTSON

Farmer Killed by Truck on 141

George S. Gilbertson 6th Victim of 1951

George S. Gilbertson, 65, of route 1, Manitowoc, died of a skull fracture shortly after he was struck down on highway 141, two miles south of the city, Wednesday morning.

Gilbertson was hit by a truck driven by Roy Scriven, 62, of Oshkosh, as he walked south on the highway near his home. The impact of the blow threw Gilbertson 24 feet into a roadside ditch. Scriven told County Traffic Captain William Ladwig, who investigated, that Gilbertson had walked into the path of his truck as the vehicle proceeded north on the highway. He had just passed a small truck when the accident occurred, Scriven said. Authorities theorized that a bracket holding an outside mirror and a signal arm had struck the farmer.

Scriven, whose truck was carrying two harness horses and sulkies from the Milwaukee state fair to the Door county fair, stopped his truck about 50 feet past the point of the accident. The truck and horses are owned by Leo B. McCormick, of Lancaster, Wis.

Gilbertson's death was the sixth to be charged to traffic in Manitowoc county this year.

Gilbertson's body was not identified until two hours after the accident. According to Doctor Theodore Teitgen, county coroner, who made his own investigation, a member of the Gilbertson household had called the ambulance to the scene without realizing that it was Gilbertson who had been injured. Mrs. Gilbertson called the sheriff's office an hour after the accident when her husband failed to return from a walk to a nearby farm where he had gone to contact a group of grain threshers.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Berge funeral home, Valders.
