Ensign R. N. Traynor, USNR, was designated Naval Aviator #9212 in 1941. Entered active service via the pre-war Aviation Cadet (AVCAD) program.

Lieut. Traynor died as result of an airplane crash, somewhere in the Pacific.

In a telegram from Vice Adm. Randall Jacobs, chief of Navy personnel, Mrs. Loren Newell of this village, has been notified of the death of her nephew, Lt. Raymond Newell Traynor.

The telegram containing the information read:

"The Navy Department deeply regrets to inform you that your nephew, Lt. Raymond Newell Traynor, USNR, was killed in a plane crash on October 10, 1944 while in the service of his country.

"The department extends to you its sincere sympathy in your great loss. On account of existing conditions the body if recovered, cannot be returned at present.

"If further details are received you will be informed."

Lt. Traynor, who was a veteran flier of World War II had been in action since the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, on December 7, 1941. Immediately after the United States declared war on the Japanese he was ordered into the Pacific and had fought there since that time.

He enlisted in the Navy Air Corps in October 1940, and received his pre-flight training at Detroit, MI. He underwent his basic at Pensacola, FL and completed his training at Jacksonville, FL.

Immediately after Pearl Harbor he was assigned to an aircraft carrier in the Pacific and for 14 months took part in all of the major engagements of the American Air arm in that theater.

Stricken with malaria he was hospitalized and then had his first leave since entering the war. He returned to duty a few weeks later and continued in the Pacific air and land battles until his death.
