Mrs. Hattie Schmiling, 78, 1603 East St., Two Rivers, wife of Otto H. Schmiling, retired keeper of the Two Rivers harbor lighthouse, died at Two Rivers Municipal Hospital early Sunday morning, where she had been a patient for five days. She had been in failing health for several years.

Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday at St. Luke Catholic Church, Two Rivers, the Rt. Rev. Msgr. C. V. Hugo officiating. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Two Rivers.

Mrs. Schmiling, nee Hattie Machia, was born at Forestville, Door County, in 1873, a daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Wilson Machia. She was married at St. Mary Catholic church at Algoma to Mr. Schmiling in 1894. They lived in Algoma until 1902 when her husband was transferred to the Sturgeon Bay Canal light where they remained until 1911, when they came to the Twin River Point light. In 1915 the family came to Two Rivers where Mr. Schmiling took charge of the harbor light until his retirement.

Surviving Mrs. Schmiling are her husband, two daughters, Miss Selma Schmiling at home, and Mrs. Harriet Smalley of Manitowoc, and a son, Otto Schmiling Jr., of Two Rivers. She also leaves four sisters, Mrs. Emil Griese of Ripon, Mrs. Nora Gaynor of Milwaukee, Mrs. Elizabeth Strutz of Glidden, Wis., and Mrs. Jennie Grenney of Sturgeon Bay. There are four grandchildren.

Mrs. Schmiling was a member of the Altar society of St. Luke Church for many years.

Friends may call at the Klein & Stangel Inc., Funeral Home, Two Rivers, from 2 p.m. Tuesday until the time of services. The rosary will be recited at the funeral home at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday.
