MARY E. GUNDERSON

MRS. GUNDERSON SUCCUMBS TO LONG ILLNESS

Death's call to rest came to Mrs. Elizabeth Gunderson at her home on North Fifth street Monday afternoon, following a serious illness of five weeks during which she had failed rapidly, following failing health for four years. Mrs. Gunderson, up to five weeks ago, had been able to be about and had attended to her home duties but for a month past had suffered from more serious conditions that had incapacitated her. While not unexpected, the death of Mrs. Gunderson is a great shock to many friends.

Mrs. Gunderson, a daughter of Capt. Carl Gustaveson, Mexican and Civil war veteran, a native of Sweden, and his wife Ambjor Stephenson Gustaveson, was born in the town of Rapids July 17, 1855 and spent her early life with her parents there. After finishing the common school she attended the Oshkosh normal school and later taught in the public schools in Pope county, Minnesota for some years.

In October 1882 she was united in marriage to Gunder Gunderson of Manitowoc Rapids. The same year Mr. and Mrs. Gunderson moved to the Red River valley and spent several years as pioneer farmers near Crookston, Minnesota. They suffered many hardships and here they lost the first two children born to them. Later they returned to their old neighborhood in Manitowoc Rapids, where they bought and operated a farm until 1917 when Mr. Gunderson died. Mrs. Gunderson removed to this city the same fall and has since continued her residence here.

Surviving Mrs. Gunderson is one son Clifford residing on the home farm and two daughters, Mrs. George Elaner and Miss Mabel at home. Two sisters, Mrs. C. C. Madsen and Mrs. Charles Kunz, of this city and two brothers, Herman Gustaveson of Rapids and Charles Gustaveson of Seattle, Wash., also survive.

Mrs. Gustaveson has assisted in caring for Mrs. Gunderson during her last illness.

Mrs. Gunderson was a devoted member, first of the Gjerpen congregation, and since moving to Manitowoc, of the First Lutheran Church. She was an active member of the Ladies Aid society. Her kindness and willingness to help others endeared her to all who knew her, and she will be sorely missed by her family and her friends.

The funeral will be held from the Geo. Eisner home, 635 North Fifth street, at 1:30 and from the First Lutheran church at 2:00 on Thursday, Feb. 4th, conducted by Rev. D. G. Ristad, assisted by Rev. A. O. Alfson. Burial will be at the Gjerpen Lutheran church cemetery.
