Jasper Newton Treece was the son of Elvarena Ritter and William C. Treece (1818-1851).

Treece was a veteran of the Civil War, having served in Co. I, 2 Reg't East Tennessee Cavalry. He mustered in as a Commissary Sergeant on September 22, 1862. He was 21 at the time of enrollment, His physical appearance was noted with a height of 6 feet -- a fair complexion with black eyes and brown hair. His occupation was given as merchant.

In May or June of 1863, and ensuing months, Jasper required hospitalization in Memphis and Winchester, Tennessee and Indianapolis, Indiana. Upon his discharge from the Indianapolis hospital in May 1864 he was transferred to the Veterans Reserve Corps for the remainder of his service. Jasper applied for a pension in May 1867.

Treece married Jane Fugate on June 27, 1872 in Claiborne County. They had one child, Alfred Newton Treece. In addition to being a farmer and merchant to support his family, Treece also served a term as Clerk of the Circuit Court of Claiborne County from 1866-1874.

Jasper died at the age of 37, most likely from injury or disease contracted during the War, leaving Jane and their four year old son just six years into their marriage.

An entry in Claiborne County's Bonds and Letters of Administration, December 1878 – August 1921, states: "It appearing that Jasper N. Treece has died, leaving no will, we have ordered that the Letters of Administration be issued to P. G. Fulkerson, this 6th day of January 1879."

Fulkerson, also widowed by 1882, married Jane Treece.

Source for burial location: Paul Johnson's Cemeteries of Claiborne County Tennessee, Revised Second Edition. On page 118 the publication seems to doubt that a stone could be correctly identified. Which member of the Fulkerson family was buried there? The entry entry in the book read " ? Fulkerson, b. Dec. 9, 1841 -- d. Dec. 6, 1878." Now, with the chalk (tsk, tsk) we can read the name and date. Years later the date of Jasper's death, December 6, 1878, was entered in court proceedings in which Alfred was a party.

I am confident that this stone indicates the burial location for Jasper and not a member of the Fulkerson family. The book listing indicates that this "? Fulkerson" is buried close to Jane Fugate Fulkerson, Jasper's wife, and her second husband Peter Fulkerson. There are actually five Fulkerson burials clustered here. Alfred Treece is also buried close by, in fact, you can see the same stones behind the stones for Jane and Alfred.
