Hit By Car, Injuries Kill Valders Boy
MANITOWOC—James Ellestad, 11, of Valders died at 3:15 a.m.
Tuesday at Holy Family Hospital of injuries received in an accident Friday afternoon.
His death raised the 1963 Wisconsin traffic toll to 677, compared with 733 on this date a year ago and brought to 15 the traffic toll in Manitowoc County compared to 14 a year ago at this time.
James, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elton Ellestad, of 327 N. Liberty St., darted into the path of a car driven by John J. Dunlevy, 25 of Manitowoc, who was traveling west alone, Manitowoc County traffic police, who investigated, reported.
Skull Fractured
Dunlevy told officers he braked sharply and veered to the right in an attempt to miss the boy. James was tossed into the air and landed in the ditch. The boy sustained compound fractures of both legs, skull fracture and head lacerations.
James was born in Manitowoc June 18, 1952, and was a student in the seventh grade at St. Mary Catholic School, Clarks Mills. He was a member of the Boy Scout troop at Valders. His mother is the former Delores McCulley.
Surviving are his parents, a brother and four sisters, (private), maternal grandmother, Mrs. Margaret McCulley, of Valders and paternal grandmother, Mrs. Mathilda Ellestad, of Manitowoc.
