Herbert V. Vogel, age 92, of 121 Roosevelt St., Valders, died Monday morning,Sept. 8, 2003 at Harmony East Home, Manitowoc.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Clarks Mills. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. James Jugenheimer. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
Herb was born Feb. 14, 1911 in the town of Cato, son of the late Louis and Theresa Meyer Vogel. On Nov. 24, 1936, Herb married the former Olga Alfson. She preceded him in death on Feb. 21, 1976. He then married the former Alma Alfson Brennan on Sept. 20, 1980. She preceded him in death on May 15, 1984.
Herb and his first wife Olga operated a tavern at Clarks Mills from 1936 until July 1, 1955. He then worked on construction for eight years. From 1965 until his retirement in 1980, he was a farm equipment salesman for Valders Implement. Herb was very active in his church and many other organizations. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Clarks Mills, all of his life and a 50-year member of the Holy Name Society. Herb was also an honorary lifetime member of the Manitowoc County Fish & Game Association, an honorary member of the Clarks Mills Sportsmen's Club, a member of the Manitowoc Eagles Club #706 since 1938, Valders Improvement Corporation serving as director since 1957 and president from 1978 to 1986. He was also a memberof the Manitowoc County Baseball Association, Manitowoc County Historical Society, Valders Senior Citizens and the Valders Lions Club. Herb wrote the book "A Brief History of Valders" in 1986. He was honored with Achievement Awards from the Lakeshore All Sports Hall of Fame and the village of Valders in 1987. He also received the distinguished Melvin Jones Award from Lions International in 1996.
Survivors include a brother and sister-in-law: Wendelin and Millie Vogel,Bay City, Mich.; a sister: Margaret Fogeltanz, Manitowoc; and a sister-in-law:Dorothy Vogel, Whitelaw. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friendsalso survive.
He was preceded in death by two brothers: Anton and Louis; and two sisters:Eleanore Johanek and Hildegarde Grall.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 4 until 8 p.m. on Friday evening, Sept. 12 at the Christianson & Deja Funeral Home, Valders, where a prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. led by the Rev. James Jugenheimer.
