YOUTH DROWNS IN RIVER; WAS CRAMP VICTIM
Robert Halverson, Cato, Will Be Buried Tuesday As First 1934 Victim
Robert Harvey Halverson, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar E. Halverson, town of Cato, was seized with cramps and drowned last night while bathing in the Manitowoc river below the lower falls.
In company with his brother, Edwin, three cousins, Holm, Donald and Arndt Pederson, and a friend, Edwin Evenson, Halverson had gone to the river to seek relief from the heat. The boys, none of whom could swim, were just about to leave the river when Robert collapsed and disappeared under the water. The other boys rushed for help and the body was recovered two hours later.
The drowning was the first one of the season in Manitowoc.
Sheriff Herman Schuette, who was informed of the drowning, borrowed the grappling hooks from the local police station and rushed to the scene, but the body had been recovered before his arrival.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the home, the Rev. E. A. Fretheim officiating. Burial will be made in the cemetery adjoining the Gjerpen Lutheran church.
Robert was born in the town of Cato and went through the graded school there.
He is survived by his parents, two brothers, Edwin and Lester; and two sisters, Edna and Doris, all at home.
The body will be removed to the home Monday from the Berge funeral parlors at Valders.
