Religious Leader. Prominent 19th Century Congregationalist minister and theologian. Influenced much of the change in religious thinking in the mid-1800's by breaking with traditional Calvinist religious ministers who espoused a vengeful and dry religion aloof from the common people. Reverend Bushnell strove to include children into religious teaching, reduce the high Orthodox Christian theology to human doctrine accessible to the masses, refute the penal aspect of theology for a one of "moral influence theory", and to teach that man and God are not dual in nature, but together as one. In addition to his theological pursuits he contributed to the discussions and issues of his day, especially in the area of contemporary American Literature. Some of his influential works were "God in Christ" (1849), "Christ in Theology" (1851), "Christian Nurture" (1861), and "Forgiveness and Law" (1874). His 1837 paper "Barbarism the First Danger" influenced the founding of Christian Colleges throughout the West. The college he founded while in California seeking medical treatment for an illness eventually became the University of California.
