Roman Catholic Saint. Founder of the Dominican Order. Born Dominic de Guzmán. His mother was to become Blessed Joan of Aza. It was decided very early on that he should have a career in the Church. At the age of twenty-five he was ordained and took up his duties. He was chosen to accompany the Bishop who had been appointed by the King to negotiate a marriage for the King's son. On the way they passed through Languedoc, in southern France, where the Albigensian heresy was winning many supporters. The owner of an inn where they stopped was an Albigensian, and Dominic spent a whole night in discussion with him. By morning he had convinced the man of his error. From that day, it appears, Dominic knew that the work God required of him was an active life of teaching in the world. In 1215 with the approval of Pope Innocent III he set up The Order of Preachers, more popularly known as the Dominican Order. It is said that under Dominic's leadership, a hundred thousand heretics were brought back to the Church. He was canonised by Pope Gregory IX on July 13th 1234. He is the patron saint of astronomers, the Dominican Republic, falsley accused people and scientists.
