Mrs. MacLeish's death came just 5 days after the second anniversary of her husband's death on April 20, 1982. The couple had been married for 65 years.
The former Ada Hitchcock, born in Unionville, Connecticut, attended a finishing school in Paris after graduating from Westover High School in Middletown in 1911. She studied piano and voice in Paris, to which she returned to live from 1922 to 1930 after her marriage to Mr. MacLeish in 1917.
The couple bought a farm in Conway, where they lived periodically between Mr. MacLeish's assignments in Washington as Librarian of Congress, assistant director of the Office of War Information during World War II and assistant Secretary of State.
Mrs. MacLeish performed in concert in Carnegie Hall in 1940, but she abandoned her singing career during World War II. In 1944 she was appointed national director of the Camp and Hospital Council Service of the American Red Cross.
Mrs. MacLeish returned to Conway with her husband in 1947 but they continued to travel until 1962 when they returned to stay.
