Greensburg — E. Thomas Barnes, 84, of Greensburg, passed away Saturday, April 6, 2013, at Decatur County Memorial Hospital, Greensburg.
Tom was born Nov. 6, 1928 in Greensburg, the son of Floyd Albert Barnes and Wilda Robbins Barnes.
He was a 1947 graduate of Greensburg Community High School and attended Purdue University, Hanover College and the University of George in Athens. He was a veteran and served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army from 1951 until 1953 at Fort Hood, Texas.
Tom was a member of Greensburg United Methodist Church, the American Legion and Hillcrest Country Club. He was a past member of the Greensburg County Club, Elks Club, Independent Fee Appraisers, the Society of Farm and Rural Appraisers, Mi-Bor, and Southeastern IN MlS.
Tom was a certified general appraiser for 55 years and appraised much of the current interstate system throughout Indiana. He enjoyed playing golf and cards with his friends as well as vacationing in Naples, Fla.
Tom was married to Barbara Louise (Brownscombe) Barnes for 47 years, and they had one daughter, Dawn (James D. Israel) Lee Barnes. Barbara preceded Tom in death.
Tom later married Shirley (Kline) Barnes and was married to "Shirl" for 12 years. She survives.
Tom has four grandchildren: Mitchell (Trisha) L. Barnes-Pettit, Spencer L. (Rebekah) Barnes-Israel, Stuart L. Barnes-Israel, and Hannah L. Barnes-Israel. He also has four great-grandchildren: Addison, Aubrie, Benjamin and Levi. Tom is also survived Shirl's son, Kevin (Janet) Silva and daughter Amy (Ron) Bryant.
Willouise (Barnes) Alley from Evansville also survives. Tom's brother, Dr. James "Jim" D. Mendenhall preceded him in death.
Tom and Jim once took a trip on a cattle boat after World War II to restock cattle and build up the herds following the war.
