Civil War Confederate Army Major General. At the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861 he was commission a First Lieutenant in Company A of the Alabama Montgomery Mounted Rifles. Rising through the ranks, he was promoted a Major in March 1862 and to Colonel in command of the 1st Alabama Cavalry, in July 1882. In command of the 1st Alabama, he led his troops in battles at Shiloh, the Corinth Siege, Perryville and was wounded at Murfreesbro. In February 1864, he was promoted Brigadier General in command of a Brigade in Lieutenant General Joseph Wheeler's Cavalry Corps, Army of Tennessee and saw action in the Atlanta Campaign. He was appointed Major General by Confederate President Jefferson Davis in 1865 and commanded the Cavalry Corps, Army of Tennessee in the Carolinas Campaign until the war's end. After the war he became a successful planter and served as a United States Marshal.
