Irene Lois May was born in Newton, Il, to Ira and Dorothy Wagner May, the second of their six children. She married Wayne D. Jones, her high school sweetheart, in 1944 when Wayne was stationed in Texas for training during active duty in WWII. After his discharge, they had two daughters while Wayne was attending and graduating from the University of Illinois. He was called again for service during the Korean War. They had two sons after he returned. They lived in Aledo, Decatur, and Monticello, IL, and had homes also in New Mexico and Florida. After retirement, they permanently moved to Florida. She returned to Illinois after Wayne died, living in the same town as her daughter.

She was survived by two daughters and two sons, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, three brothers and two sisters. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, half-sisters Rhea May Whitener and Mildred May Jansen and half-brothers Melvin May and George May.

Irene was a master gardener and award-winning flower arranger, cook, sewist, and crafter. There wasn't anything she wouldn't try, even riding a small motorcycle alongside Wayne in the Southwest looking for rocks and caves. She was very active in her church and for many years was the church secretary. She watched over many elderly folks and made her rounds to spend a few hours with them on a regular basis. She was a terrific mom, adored wife, and wonderful Grandma. She was a remarkable woman.
