Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. He was a 1st Lieutenant in the Union Army, resigning his commission in 1861, to support the Confederacy in the Civil War. Commissioned Captain of Artillery Corps, C. S. A., he served in Virginia with General Garnett and became his chief of artillery. In early 1862, he fought at the Battle of Rich Mountain where he was wounded and captured. After his prisoner exchange, he was promoted a Major in the 20th Battalion Virginia Artillery and as Lieutenant Colonel ordnance officer in July 1862. In 1863, he was promoted Brigadier General of the Ordnance Bureau, but shortly declined his commission reverting to the rank of Colonel. For the remainder of the war, he served as Colonel, senior officer inspector of arsenals at Richmond, Virginia. After the war he was engaged in shipping out of Washington City, D.C.
