Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. At the start of the Civil War, he was a member of the Provincial Congress of the Southern Confederacy in Montgomery, Alabama and later in Richmond, Virginia. He resigned his congressional seat, formed the 7th Texas Infantry and was commissioned Brigadier General in September 1862. In the succeeding years, he led the 7th Texas Infantry, 3rd, 10th, 30th, 41st, 50th Tennessee Infantries and the 1st Tennessee Battalion in many southern battles. While fighting in the Battle of Richmond, Virginia, October 7, 1864, he was killed in action on the field at age 36.
