Writer, poet. At the age of three, his father died followed by his mother ten years later. He attended school at Gothenburg. and several of his works were published during his high school years. Continuing his studies at Lund in 1774, he was writing poetry for a weekly magazine. Two years later, he joined the Swedish East India Company traveling to China, leaving the ship in Cape Town and by September had returned to the University of Greifswald. While in Paris, he wrote the play "Erik XIV." Returning home he co-authored the newspaper "Blessing Freedom of the Press," publishing some of his poems. He also penned his opera "Medea" borrowing some themes from the another opera. Other significant writings during that time were "The Death of Spastara," and "The Year 1783." Arriving in Finland in 1787, he would begin writing "The Last Judgment," which is considered his masterpiece. Other writings from that time are his religious oratorios, "The Destruction of Jerusalem," and "Messiah in Gethsemane." Back in Stockholm, he was appointed the title of royal secretary in 1792, but he died destitute. The Swedish Academy in 1860 placed the stone on his grave site.
