Jazz Musician. Born in Wilmington, North Carolina he was the last surviving charter member of the highly regarded Modern Jazz Quartet. Its finely organized arrangements and restrained sound were frequently labeled cool jazz. He was often an accompanist to jazz greats like Miles Davis, Charlie Parker and Thelonious Monk. He provided the subdued backbone of the innovative Modern Jazz Quartet from 1952 until the long running ensemble dissolved in 1999. Cause of death: bone cancer in South Hampton, New York.
