Civil War Union Army Officer. He served during the Civil War in the 104th New York Volunteer Infantry, rising from Major to Colonel, and commanding it in Battles such as Gettysburg and The Wilderness. He was captured by Confederate forces at the Battle of Weldon Road, Virginia (August 19, 1864) and spent time in three Confederate Prisons (one being Richmond's infamous Libby Prison) before being paroled on February 22, 1865.
