Civil War Union Army Officer. He served during the Civil War in the 88th New York Volunteer Infantry, which was part of the famed "Irish Brigade". Beginning as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company C in September 1861, he rose to Lieutentant Colonel and commander of the regiment, receiving three serious wounds during his service.
