Afton Schmutz Gibson, age 93, returned home to her Heavenly Father April 23, 2013 at her home in Washington. She was surrounded by her loving family. She was born October 30, 1919 in Washington, Utah to Herman and Minnie Prisbrey Schmutz. She graduated from Dixie High School in the Class of 1936. She married Hugh "Red" Gibson, May 24, 1941 in Las Vegas, NV. Their marriage was later solemnized in the St. George LDS Temple. Red died in 2002.

Afton was a wonderful mother. She truly loved her husband, Red, children and grandchildren. Her husband, Red, was an exceptional gardener and Afton made sure all the produce did not go to waste. She enjoyed bottling, canning and giving to family and friends.

She was an excellent cook. For many years she made pies for the Market Basket. She did many handcrafts such as crochet and quilting. She volunteered for 25 years as a Pink Lady at the Dixie Medical Center and was also a volunteer for the Washington Historical Society.

She was an active member of the LDS Church and served faithfully throughout her entire life.

Afton is survived by her children, Gerald Sam Gibson, Gloria (John) Gledhill, Reeta Sorenson, Joyce Piper, Douglas Abner (Melanie) Gibson, Dennis (Billie) Gibson, Alpine (Winona) Gibson and George S. Gibson, all of Washington, Utah; 25 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh "Red" Gibson; daughter, Minnie Lynn Gibson and grandson, Adam Sorenson: son-in laws, Clair Sorenson and Dale Piper.

Funeral services will be Friday, April 26 at 11:00 a.m. in the Washington Ward Chapel, 82 N. Main St., Washington, UT. Visitations will be Thursday, April 25 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Spilsbury Mortuary, 110 S. Bluff St., St. George, and on Friday, April 26 from 9:30 to 10:30 in the Chapel, prior to services. Interment will be in the Washington City Cemetery, Washington, UT.
