The first Chinese individual to come to the United States to receive a college education (Yale University). He was counted Rev. Joseph Twichell and Mark Twain among his close friends. He founded the China Educational Mission in 1871. He returned to China to join the Reform Movement in 1898 and a price was placed on his head. He returned to the US in 1902 and wrote his memoirs, "My Life in China and America."
