James P. Taylor was United States Commissioner of Patents, Author, Inventor, and Adjutant General of Tennessee under Robert L. Taylor's first administration as Governor of Tennessee.

He served in the US Patent Office during the Andrew Johnson administration, while his father negotiated treaties with the plains Indian tribes. He was one of the inventors of the machine gun. Family folklore is that Richard Gatling was a neighbor and stole his design. Gatling patented the first machine gun in 1862, which was used by the Union in the Civil War. James P. Taylor formed a company, The Taylor Repeating Ordinance Association, and entered into contract negotiations with Remington. Reportedly James P. Taylor's gun design was eventually sold to the Gardner Gun Company of Hartford, CT. According to the Remington Society of America Journal, six patents were issued to him from 1871 to 1878.
