Ellis was the son of Napoleon Bonapart and Sophia (Milford)or (Medford) Childers. Napoleon served as District Judge of the Creek Nation for 16 years. Siblings of Ellis were: Anderson John Childers, Coolie Van Childers, and James Eugene Childers.

In 1877 Ellis attended Tullahassee Mission School, and from 1880-1884 was in Pennsylvania at the Carlisle Government School and Lincoln University. He returned to Wagoner, Indian Territory and married Fannie Lee Davis.

Children with Fannie: Walter A.Childers, Irene Childers,Fannie Lee, and Viola.

Ellis owned cattle, "Childers-Wilson Pasture Co.," and later studied and was admitted to the bar in 1887. His law firm: Childers & Mingo. He became a member of and was Speaker of the House of Warriors (Creek Nation) in 1887 and served two terms. His Creek Roll # 3741.

After his wife Fannie died, he married Lucy Mosely in 1896. He later married Tennie Windom Starks. Their children: Clarence A.(b 10 Jul 1912); Anderson John (b 13 Jun 1915); Ernest (b 1 Feb 1918); Ellis Buffington (b 15 Aug 1921); and Burns Owen (b 17 Mar 1923). His son Ernest Childers won the Congressional Medal of Honor for his brave acts in World War II while serving in Italy.
