Samuel was the son of William J. Young and Josephine Humprhey. On 21 Oct 1914 he married Alma Gutman and they had one daughter, Alma. He was a World War I veteran who served as an apprentice seaman in the 9th Naval Reserves. As a young man he was employed as a chauffeur and later as a lineman for the city of Louisville, Kentucky. At the time of his death he owned a bar/cafe. Samuel died at his home, 1227 Story Avenue, of a coronary occlusion at the age of 44.
