March 10, 1928 — April 23, 2013

Harvey Vernon Lien, 85, of Albany went to be with his Lord and Savior Tuesday at Samaritan Albany General Hospital.

He was born in Fox, Minn., to Albert E. and Minnie Florence (Hagen) Lein.

At the age of 17 he joined the Navy, which required him to have his dad's signature, and he served in Guam.

He moved to Albany, where his sister, Ardele, lived in 1969 from Hoyt Lakes, Minn. He brought with him three of his six children, Nancy, Scott and Shannon. They traveled from Minnesota in a school bus, which Harvey had gutted creating one bedroom, a galley space for four bunk beds, a bathroom, a kitchen and a living room. Harvey and his children lived in that bus for almost one year after relocating to Albany.

Harvey worked at Barrett Brothers as a mechanic. He then worked at Fisher Implement and finally at Harts Nursery before retiring. He enjoyed woodworking, mechanics, reading and exercising. Just three months before his death he was still using his 50-pound barbell for bicep curls and doing 100 pushups daily as he could.

He was an active member of Albany First Evangelical Church from 1974-2008. He was very involved in Albany First Assembly's bus ministry for Sunday school. He loved all the children and touched many lives. He began attending St. Anne's Orthodox Church in April of 2012. In January of this year, at the age of 84, his friends and family celebrated as Harvey was baptized at St. Anne's. He was blessed to be baptized that day along with newborn Ezekiel Sheild. A beautiful example of life at the beginning and near the end both spiritually and physically; much nearer to the end of his physical life than anyone anticipated.

Harvey is survived by son Scott Lien of Minneapolis, Minn; daughters Nancy Hampton of Lebanon, Shannon Ohling and husband Dirk of Albany, Cheryl Brooks of New Haven, Ind., and Beth Fishback and husband Ron of Hillsboro; sister Joyce Goodman of Biwabik, Minn.; brother Milton Lein of Williams, Minn.; 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

"WE WILL MISS YOU Dad, Grandpa, Great-grandpa, Brother."

He was preceded in death by his mother. Minnie Lein (when Harvey was 6 years old); father Albert Lein, brother Stanley Lein, sister Ardele Perkins and daughter Karen Philipps. Harvey will especially enjoy being with his mother and Karen again. He missed them both very much.

A vigil will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, at St. Anne Orthodox Church. A funeral service will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 8, at St. Anne Orthodox Church. There will be a fellowship time after the funeral with food provided for anyone who wants to stay. Burial will be 2 p.m. Thursday, May 9, at Willamette National Cemetery.
