Dr. John Phifer was born in Louisiana in 1847 and was very affected by the Civil War when he led drills for other teenaged boys. His father and beloved brother, Thomas, both fought for the South. Thomas was killed in the Battle of Antietam. His parents, Silas and Harriet, he and his sister moved to Illinois to be near his uncle Cornelius in Fayette County. While the rest of his family returned to the South, he remained in Illinois. He married Sarah Owens, who was born in Knox County Ohio, where his parents were raised. Many people from Knox County moved to Effingham County Illinois.

As a young father, John was put through Medical School by his parents. He took classes at Tulane, but was graduated from St Louis Medical College in 1878. He was the first physician in Shumway Illinois. He retired briefly about 1910, then returned to Stewardson, Illinois where he had his medical practice as well as founding a bank.They returned to Chicago about 1919 where they lived with their son, LeRoy, a dentist, and his family. Their two other sons, Dr Charles and Dr Frank practiced medicine and their two daughters were nurses. Dr Charles and Irene are buried in the same plot with their parents.
