Son of Robert and Mary (Quince) Laverty.

On 15 Aug 1847 William married Margaret Ann Elizabeth Bonner, 16, daughter of Alexander Bonner and Jane McManiman, at Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts. They had three children.

On 20 Jun 1861 William mustered into service with the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, being credited to the quota of Worcester, Massachusetts.

William and his brother, Robert F. Laverty, served together in the 15th Massachusetts.

On 15 Feb 1864 he ended military service with the 15th Massachusetts by transfer to the 1st Infantry Veterans' Reserve Corps, Company H, mustering out on on 6 Aug 1864.

Starting 14 Sep 1864, William also served in the 29th Company, Unattached Massachusetts Heavy Artillery Regiment, mustering out of that unit on 16 Jun 1865.

William and his wife had separated before the war, and it appears that they divorced at the latest after the war. remarried one Henry Robinson in 1866.

On 27 Dec 1886, at National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, Togus, Kennebec County, Maine, William was admitted.

He made application for a veteran's pension on 17 Jan 1887, and received certificate number 368740.

He died on 5 Nov 1891 at Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts, of pulmonary oedema. He was 63 years old.
