BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH & SOURCES for
- THOMAS HULL, the Younger, b c 1552; bur 29 December 1636, Crewkerne
- JOANE PESON (PYSING), no b record; bur 30 October 1629, Crewkerne

Thomas Hull, the Younger, and his wife Joane Peson were the parents of two early emigrants to New England: George Hull, who emigrated in 1632, and Rev Joseph Hull, who led a congregation of 102 to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1635. Thomas the Younger was the son of Richard Hull and his second wife Alice, whose surname is unrecorded. He married Joane Peson on 11 January 1572 in Crewkerne. She was the daughter of Richard Peson (Pysing) and his wife Margery [2].

The couple lived first in Winsham, but moved to nearby Crewkerne after the birth of their first two children, William and Mary. The Hull Family Association's genealogist Phyllis Hughes was unable to learn Thomas's occupation, but notes that he was in the "yeoman class" of commoners who owned land. He was prosperous enough to send two sons to Oxford: Rev William Hull, who spent his lifetime serving as vicar of Colyton, and Rev Joseph Hull, who made three trans-Atlantic crossings and worked as a minister in both England and New England [3].

Only five of Thomas and Joane Hull's eleven children lived to adulthood, according to Somerset Church of England parish records. Their names are capitalized in the list below. All baptisms and burials were in Crewkerne unless otherwise noted.

1. Rev WILLIAM, bap 6 Nov 1574, Winsham; bur 1 June 1627, Coylton
2. Mary, bap 26 Sept 1576, Winsham; bur 6 Sept 1584
3. Agnes, no b/bap; bur 11 Feb 1579
4. Richard, bap 21 Nov 1579; bur 27 Mar 1597
5. Thomas Jr, bap 21 July 1582; d before 20 May 1627*
6. Robert, bap 8 Nov 1584; bur 5 Apr 1597
7. JOHN, bap 14 Feb 1587; bur 10 Oct 1627
8. GEORGE, b 27 Aug 1590; d 29 Dec 1659, Fairfield, CT
9. FRANCIS, bap 13 Feb 1592; d before 20 May 1627*
10. Joseph, bap 20 Mar 1594; bur 15 Apr 1595
11. Rev JOSEPH, b 25 Apr 1596; d 19 Nov 1665, Isles of Shoals, Maine

* Rev William Hull wrote his will on 20 May 1627. Neither his brother Thomas Jr nor his brother Francis appeared in his will; both were likely already dead.

Joane Peson Hull was buried in the churchyard at Crewkerne on 30 October 1629. She was likely in her mid- or late-70s. Thomas Hull the Younger outlived his wife and son John, his only child to remain in Crewkerne as an adult. In his 17 Dec 1636 will, Thomas left his estate to John's children:

"All my goods and chattells to my daughter-in-law Edith Hull's four children, to be divided between them as shall be most need by the discretion of John Ball, schoolmaster [headmaster of Crewkerne Free Grammar School, 1613-1636], and John Bere the elder. Edith Hull, my daughter-in-law to be executrix in trust for her four children. Witnesses: John Ball, John Beere."

Thomas's father was Richard Hull (c1515-1559), a miller and husbandman, and his second wife, Alice (1525-1587). Her surname is unknown. There's no evidence for the recent suggestion that she was a member of the aristocratic Yeard family. Thomas Hull had 2 full siblings: an older brother James (c1550-1567) and a younger brother John (c1554-1588). His older half-brother Thomas was probably about 13 when Thomas himself was born and named Thomas. Hence the need for a "Thomas the Elder" and a "Thomas the Younger" in a single generation. His half-siblings were William (b c1536), Thomas the Elder (c1538-1612), Elynor (b c1540), and Raynold (c1540-1583) [4].

Joane's father Richard Pysing was born in Abbotsbury, Dorset, in the 1520s. He married Margery, whose surname is unrecorded. There's no evidence she was an Everred. She survived her husband. His will, dated 13 April 1588, names children Elizabeth and Robert Pysinge and married daughters Mary Labye and Joan Hull. It was proved 25 June 1588. He chose Margery to be the will's "residuary legatee and executrix" [5]. He, too, was buried in Crewkerne.

As noted, two children of Thomas Hull the Younger and Joane Peson were early 17th-century New England emigrants. Their lineages end with their grandfather Richard. The Hull Family Association's genealogist was unable to find earlier records, as parish registers weren't kept before 1538 [6].
