After a brief illness, loving husband, devoted father and grandfather, 1000 Islander hockey coach, world traveler and avid outdoorsman Gerald "Pete" McGill passed away at the age of 79 on May 4, 2013. Formerly of Saranac Lake and Baldwinsville, Pete had resided in Jacksonville, Fla., since 2003.

Pete is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Barbara; two sons: Captain Tim McGill of Atlantic Beach, Fla., and Mike McGill of Binghamton; two daughters-in-law: Laura McGill of Atlantic Beach, Fla., and Alison Jensen Senft of Endicott; five beautiful grandchildren: Anna, Leighanne, Thomas, Kelly and Michelle; and four siblings: Howard McGill, Carol Williams, Donna Law and Jackie Van Cour.

Born in 1934, Pete was raised in Saranac Lake. While growing up, Pete spent many of his days hunting and fishing in the Adirondack Park. He continued to hunt and fish his entire life. After graduating from Saranac Lake High School, he served in the U.S. Navy's submarine service until 1959. After the service, Pete attended SUNY Plattsburgh, graduating in 1962 with a degree in elementary education.
Pete and Barb lived in Baldwinsville from 1962 to 2003, where he taught 5th and 6th grade at McNamara, Reynolds and Ray schools. Pete was a gifted teacher. To this day, his former students talk of how much he cared for them. They tell stories of a man who really made a difference in their lives. Pete loved hockey. He was a talented player, referee and coach. He was one of the founding members of the Baldwinsville High School Ice hockey club.

Pete loved spending summers at his cottage on Grenell Island in the Thousand Islands and spending his winter traveling the world with Barb.

There will be a memorial mass in Jacksonville Beach, Fla., at 11 a.m. June 24 at St. Paul's Catholic Church. Pete will be buried in the Jacksonville National Veterans Cemetery.
