Ronald Richard Rakes died at the youthful age of 17 years old. He was the son of Theodore T. Rakes and Bertie Hooper.

Richard as he was known by his friends and sometimes he was called "Ronnie" by family and friends died in an accident at UNCG. The accident occurred while Richard was down in a 12 ft hole removing 'shore-in' wood from the sides of the hole. The hole was used to place electrical cables for UNCG campus. Richard died when the soft dirt caved in all around him. Richard is remembered by family and friends although he has been gone for 47 years.

Richard is also remembered as an 'old soul' in a young body. He even made the comment once of an old saying about himself. He would say, "I will live hard, die young and leave a beautiful memory." It would seem that he somehow knew he would not live a long life and surely he didn't. He talked about matters of the world and issues that were far behind his years. He loved to dance and sing to the music of the day. He loved "Sugar, Pie, Honey Bunch by the 4 Tops. He was a very gentle, caring and thoughtful person who had respect for his elders and always used the manners that he was taught. He referred to his elders as "Mrs. or Mr." and always said, "Yes, Sir and No, Sir and No, Sir and No, Madam!"
