Gad Ely was the son of Asahel Upson and his wife Lydia Webster. He was born in Marion, Connecticut. Gad and two brothers moved west in the 1850's. He served in the U.S. Army during the Mexican War and later was an Indian agent in Fort Benton, Montana. He was a candidate as a delegate for the U.S. Congress from Montana Territory in 1865. He died of tuberculosis in San Francisco.

Death of Major Upson.— Major Gad Ely Upson, United States Indian Agent of Montana Territory, died yesterday at the residence of C. A. Peake, at Seventh and M streets. The deceased was a brother of Lauren Upson, formerly editor of the Union, and at present United States Surveyor General of California. The deceased arrived in this city some four or five weeks ago, having left Montana on account of ill health, designing ,to go East by steamer. Failing in health so rapidly as to preclude the fulfillment of his design, he remained with his relative in this city until his decease. His funeral will take place from Grace Church; at 3 o'clock p. m. to-morrow. The deceased was last Fall nominated by the Union party of Montana as a candidate for Delegate to Congress, but was beaten by Lane, the Democratic candidate. He was a native of the State of Connecticut.
