Author, Scientist. Born in Vyritsa, Russia, he studied in St. Petersburg and earned a navigator diploma from a nautical school. In 1924, he became the senior sailor of a vessel on the Pacific Ocean in the town of Vladivostok, Russia. He returned to St. Petersburg and entered Leningrad State University where he began doing paleontology work. The hard work forced him to drop out so he joined the Leningrad College of Mines. He graduated in 1935 with a Ph.D degree. In 1940 he published an article about Taphonomy in the Pan-American Geologist Journal. He won the State Prize in 1952 for his work in Taphonomy. Expeditions were made by him to the South Gobi Desert where his team discovered many dinosaur & reptile bones which are now on display in the Moscow Paleontological Museum. Due to a heart condition, he left his work as a scientist in 1959. He was now able to focus on his writing. Some of his literary works include the novel "Tumannost Andromedy", "Serdtse Zmei", "Lezvie Britvy", "Chas Byka", and "Tais Afinskaya". His books raised some concern with Marxists and Leninists. Shortly after his death, the KGB raided his former home but found nothing of interest. However, they continued to investigate him for 8 more years. The KGB gathered 40 volumes worth of information on him. The Crimean Astrophysical Observatory named the asteroid "Efremiana" in honor of Efremov.
