Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. He graduated from West Point in 1841, was commissioned an officer in the 8th U.S. Infantry and fought in Florida during the Seminole Wars. At the start of the Civil War, he entered the Confederate Army as a Captain in the 17th Mississippi Infantry and fought at the Battle of Antietam. He was appointed Colonel of the 46th Mississippi Regiment in December, 1862 and participated during the Vicksburg Campaign. In March 1863, he was promoted Brigadier General in command of a brigade in the Tennessee Army and fought during the Atlanta Campaign. At the Battle of Nashville on December 15, 1864, he was severely wounded and was captured by Union forces during his retreat. He was paroled after the war's end and later taught mathematics and civil engineering at the University of Mississippi.
