World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Burton upon Tent, England, he served as a Lance Corporal in the 1/6th Battalion, North Staffordshire Regiment, British Army and was the most decorated serviceman of World War I. During the operations at Mannequin Hill, of Sequehart, Franch, on October 3-4, 1918, Lance Corporal Coltman, was a stretcher-bearer. Hearing that wounded had been left behind during a retirement, on his own initiative, he went forward alone in the face of fierce enemy fire, found the wounded and dressed them. On three successive occasions he carried comrades on his back to safety, saving their lives. For most conspicuous bravery, he was promoted Corporal and invested with his Victoria Cross by King George V at Buckingham Palace, on May 22, 1919. His other service awards included Distinguished Conduct Medal twice, Military Medal twice, British War Medal, Victory Medal, Special Constabulary Service Medal, Defense Medal and the French Croix de Guerre. He died at age 82 in Burton upon Tent, England.
