In 1862, he led his company at the Battle of Williamsburg, the second Battle of Bull Run and was wounded twice. Promoted Colonel in command of the 14th Louisiana in August 1862, he led his troops at Antietam and in the Gettysburg Campaign of 1863. In 1864, he was promoted Brigadier General, participated in the battles of the Wilderness and was severely wounded in the Shenandoah Valley which
