Kenneth J. Kammeraad, age 82, of Grand Haven, passed away Monday, May 20, 2013, at his home. He was born April 18, 1931 in Grand Haven to the late Joseph and Hanna (Van Doorne) Kammeraad. Ken married Elizabeth Davison and she preceded him in death. Ken attended Hope College from 1949 to 1951. He finished his Mortuary Science Degree at Wayne University from 1951-1952 and served as the class president. He enlisted and served as a member of the U.S. Coast Guard from 1952 to 1956. After returning to Grand Haven, he worked with his father at the Kammeraad Funeral Home before starting his long career as a banker: working for Security First Bank & Trust, Pacesetter Bank & Trust and retiring from Old Kent Bank in 1996. During his life he was active in many community and professional organizations; founding member of the Grand Haven AMBUCS, Grand Haven Kiwanis Club, the Tri-Cities Historical Museum and the Michigan Funeral Directors Association. From 1966 to 1996, he served as a member of the Michigan Bankers Association and was a past president and director of the Chamber of Commerce from 1971 to 1975. Ken was a Treasurer and Trustee of the North Ottawa Community Hospital Authority from 1967 to 1977 and was an Elder from 1967 to 1970 at First Presbyterian Church in Grand Haven. He was a co-founder of The Guild of Shakers Crafts in Spring Lake. The Guild was involved in making Shaker furniture for more than 18 years. He also enjoyed model ship building, long train rides, big cities and traveling by ship. Ken is survived by his loving family; son, Joel (Judi) Kammeraad of Spring Lake; daughter Lisa Jacobs of White Cloud; special friend, Mickey Ver Duin of Spring Lake; grandchildren, Derek, Drew, Emily and Riley of Spring Lake and Amber (Jeramie) of Rockford; great-grandchildren, Skylar, Brice and Zander also of Rockford and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his son-in-law Thomas Jacobs. The funeral service for Ken will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at Klaassen Family Funeral Home with Dr. Tom Cook officiating. Friends and relative are invited to greet the family one hour prior to the service at the Funeral Home. Interment will be at Lake Forest Cemetery.
