NOTE: Many researchers have made the mistake of confusing this George Washington Turley with another George Washington Turley who was born in 1830. Both were born in West Virginia (different counties).

According to cemetery records, this burial lot was purchased by George Fechtig. Unfortunately, most of the markers in this lot are so old that they no longer have any discernible information. However, cemetery office staff confirmed that George Turley's grave space is located in the Fechtig lot which is indicated by the large spire type monument in the pictures to the right.

George W. Turley and Narcissa Yoe Fechtig were united in marriage on Sept. 17, 1856 by the Rev. E. R. Veitch.

They had a son, Robert Turley listed on the 1880 census. Robert was born about 1872 in Maryland. He must have died young since this is the only time that his name has been found.

Geo. W. Turley died at 1:35 a.m. at his home in Summit ave., from paralysis, aged 75 years. He was paralyzed three times, sustaining the last stroke about seven weeks ago.

The deceased was a member of the Presbyterian church and is survived by his wife and three sons: Harry and Thorton F., both of Hagerstown; Geo. F., chief train dispatcher for the N. & W. at Roanoke.

Mr. Turley was a son of Dr. Charles A. Turley, formerly from near Fairfax Court House, but latterly of Morefield, W.Va., where he was born. He was engaged in agriculture most of his lifetime both in Maryland and Virginia, and for 20 years resided at Surrey. In 1856 he married Miss Narcissa Y. Fechtig, and sister of Dr. George Fechtig, to whom was born three sons. He was a quiet, kind-mannered gentleman, highly respected by all his neighbors.
